2005 Carolina's Order of the Arrow Indian Seminar

Carolinas OA Indian Seminar Rules and Group Leader Information

This is the information that each group leader receives at check in.

Welcome to the Carolinas Order of the Arrow Indian Seminar sponsored by Eswau Huppeday Lodge 560 of Piedmont Council, North Carolina. We hope you and your group will enjoy the weekend and participate fully in all the activities. We ask you as group leader to please go over with your contingent the information found on this sheet. If you have any questions, comments, or complaints, please notify one of the seminar advisers.

All Tobacco, smoked or otherwise, is prohibited inside all buildings here at the Continuing Education Center. Please restrict your smoking to outdoors. Youth under 18 are not permitted to use tobacco any products, in accordance with state and BSA guidelines. Please use exterior ashtrays.

Food, drink, and gum is prohibited in all classrooms, hallways, auditorium, and stage. Drinks will be permitted in the gym at the discretion of the arena director. Caution your participants to avoid having food or drinks around the vendor tables in the hallway outside the gym.

Unfortunately, the Continuing Education Center is not in the very best part of town. Nobody should leave the seminar site for a stroll around the neighborhood. The only reason anyone should leave is if they are staying and/or eating off site. Youth should be accompanied by responsible adults.

If you are staying in a room, remember that these are working classrooms and will be used Monday. If you move desks and chairs, return them to their original position Sunday. Damage to the rooms or the facility could cause us to lose this site for future seminars.

Due to safety regulations, sleeping is not permitted in the hallways, stairwells, elevator area, or dressing rooms.

Keep the bathrooms and showers clean and remember toilets are not toys. Guys, please lift the seat when appropriate. If you need paper goods, please go to the seminar office or kitchen. Notify the seminar office if there are problems with the plumbing.

Lost and found will be at the seminar office. Please notify them if you lose or find something. Make sure everyone has their name on their seminar handbook and meal ticket. Lost items from years past will be sold at the 4:00 p.m. Patch Auction!

Please remove all sleeping and personal gear from the classrooms and gym by 7:30 Saturday morning, as we will need the space for classes. Lock all gear in your vehicles. The Carolinas OA Indian Seminar and the Mitchell Community College Continuing Education Center can not be held responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal property.

Trash bags will be available at the registration desk, the seminar office, and the dining room throughout the seminar. If an interior trash can is overflowing, please help by emptying it and installing a new bag. Seminar staff will attempt to keep the big outside cans emptied.

Remind everyone to observe lights out on Friday and Saturday. This means everyone should be in their quarters and quiet. We have participants who drive hundreds of miles and they deserve their sleep.

Parking lots, exterior areas, breezeway, gym lobby, teepee area, walkways, and stairwells are off limits to youth between 1 and 6 am. Security will take the name of all youth found in these areas during this time, unless the youth is accompanied by an adult. Everyone in these areas should have a very good explanation for their presence in these areas. This is quiet time. (We are not going to be anal about this and bug people on the way to the restroom, but loitering and suspicious activity after midnight will not be tolerated.)

The second floor of the main classroom building is off limits at all times to all CIS participants. NO Exceptions.

There is now a pay phone located in the main hallway at the registration area. The nearest other pay phones are 1/4 miles down the street (remember the neighborhood). Use cell phones if possible.

We have a first aid station with a trained paramedic on duty 24 hours a day. Please report to the first aid station if you are injured or ill.

Please observe the times when your group is scheduled to eat. We have a very limited dining space and an ever increasing crowd. We ask that you enjoy your meal and make your table space available to others as soon as you are finished.

The dining hall closes at 11:30 or earlier each night, no exceptions. The cook team needs their rest. The dining room will be open for coffee and juice the rest of the time. Please be advised that we will have to hold some classes in the dining hall.

Check the hall outside the auditorium, at the dining room, and at the check in area for updated information during the seminar. Class changes will be posted here as well as other information.

Respect the privacy of those staying in teepees and observe teepee etiquette.

Illegal feathers or animal items are prohibited from the Carolina's OA Indian Seminar. If you have any doubts about animal parts, please attend the feather laws class if offered, or see Ed deTorres.

Sunday Check-out Procedures:

Police your immediate area and place all trash in the appropriate containers.

Check your sleeping area thoroughly. Our lost and found is getting bigger each year.

If you are staying in a classroom, return the chairs and desks to their original position. Please make an extra effort to get all the feather waste off of the carpet. Take all trash to the dumpster outside the kitchen. Failure to abide by this rule will result in your group being assigned to the gym in the future.

Please dispose of all broken feathers, fluffies, and unwanted projects.

Check the showers and bathrooms for missing clothes. Again, if you donut want an article of clothing, throw it away.

Everyone is asked to pick up several pieces of trash and dispose of it properly. The more you clean up, the less we have to pay the school to clean up.

Report all damage or problems to the seminar office.
